Which has more room, the Tucson or the RAV4?
The Tucson, especially in the back: 1,050 mm of second-row legroom according to Hyundai Canada, versus 960 mm for the RAV4 according to Toyota Canada, 9 cm more. Set the front seat to your position, then sit behind it; with a rear-facing child seat, check how much room is left for the front passenger. In the cargo area, the gap is smaller: 1,097 L for the Tucson Hybrid versus 1,070 L for the RAV4 (1,036 L on the XLE with Premium package and XSE with Technology package). Exception: the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid drops to 1,004 mm in the back and 902 L of cargo space, versus 951 L for the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid SE.
N Line Hybrid or RAV4 XLE Premium: what are the differences?
The Tucson N Line Hybrid adds heated rear seats, the Bose sound system, leather-and-suede seats and ambient lighting to the Night Edition. The RAV4 XLE with Premium package uses less fuel, 5.7 versus 6.7 L/100 km, and tows more, 3,500 versus 2,000 lb. Both offer a panoramic sunroof, a heated steering wheel, wireless charging, a power tailgate and a digital key.
The two hybrids don't use the same transmission: six speeds at Hyundai, an eCVT with no fixed ratios at Toyota. According to the published road tests, the Tucson switches from electric to gas almost without you noticing and stays quiet on the highway; the new-generation RAV4 drones less than the previous one under acceleration. On your test drive, pass another vehicle in each, then drive over a rough stretch of road.
At the top of the range, the lists look alike: ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, driver's seat memory, head-up display and surround-view camera on the Tucson Ultimate Hybrid as on the RAV4 Limited. Toyota adds two wireless chargers; Hyundai, remote smart parking assist.

Which uses less fuel, the Tucson or the RAV4?
The RAV4: 5.5 L/100 km combined for the LE according to Toyota Canada, versus 6.7 L/100 km for the Tucson Hybrid according to Hyundai Canada.
At 20,000 km a year, the 1.0 L/100 km gap between the RAV4 XLE (5.7) and the Tucson N Line Hybrid (6.7) works out to about 200 litres of gas a year.
Which is better equipped for winter?
Both have standard all-wheel drive; on the RAV4 Hybrid it comes from a 40 kW electric motor at the rear wheels, according to Toyota Canada. The spec sheets don't establish which one performs better in snow: the difference is in the standard equipment. On a January morning, any Tucson starts from the key fob and you grab a heated steering wheel, starting with the Preferred; in a RAV4 LE, the urethane steering wheel isn't heated.
- Heated steering wheel: standard on every Tucson. At Toyota, it arrives with the XLE.
- Heated rear seats: Tucson N Line and Ultimate. At Toyota, only the RAV4 Limited.
- Remote start: standard on the key fob of every Tucson.
- Ground clearance: 210 mm for the Tucson, 206 mm for the RAV4, except the Woodland at 216 mm.

On the basic warranty, Hyundai covers two more years and 40,000 km more, and its roadside assistance lasts 5 years instead of 3. Toyota covers the hybrid battery for two more years or 80,000 km more: up to 10 years or 240,000 km, whichever comes first, versus 8 years or 160,000 km at Hyundai. If you keep the vehicle three to five years and under 100,000 km, the Tucson's basic warranty is a concrete advantage; if you keep it for a long time, Toyota's battery coverage matters more.
Tucson or RAV4: which is more reliable?
For the 2026 RAV4, nobody can say yet: it's an all-new generation with no track record. The current Tucson has been on sale since the 2022 model year and was refreshed for 2025. Hyundai's longer warranty doesn't prove it will have fewer problems: it determines who pays for covered repairs, and for how long. For a specific model and year, Transport Canada's recalls database gives the official list of recalls.
Which plug-in hybrid should you choose?
The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid SE claims 89 km of electric range and 324 hp, according to Toyota Canada; the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, 51 km and 268 hp, according to Hyundai Canada. If you charge regularly and want to drive on electricity as much as possible, take the RAV4 SE: its claimed electric range beats the Tucson's by 38 km. Without regular access to a charging station, go for a conventional hybrid; the most frugal is still the RAV4 LE.
