What do all the trims have in common?

- a 110.3 kWh battery;
- a heat pump with battery heating, standard on all five trims;
- the same 5,060 mm bodyand the same cargo area: 620 L behind the third row, 1,323 L behind the second, 2,462 L behind the front seats;
- fast charging up to 350 kW and a 10.9 kW on-board charger;
- the V2L function through an exterior adapter, which lets you power an electrical device from the battery.
The front trunk, however, changes: 88 L on the Essential RWD, 52 L on the all-wheel-drive trims, where the front motor takes up part of the space.
What do you pay for at each step?
From the Essential RWD to the Preferred AWD
What the Preferred AWD adds over the Essential RWD, according to Hyundai Canada's spec sheet
Price gap
$5,000 (as of )
Added
All-wheel drive and 303 hp instead of 215 · 5,000 lb of towing capacity instead of 3,500 · trailer pre-wiring · heated steering wheel · leatherette seats · power passenger seat · digital key · rear occupant alert with ultrasonic sensor · mud guards
Unchanged
19-in. wheels · 8-speaker audio · battery and cargo area
Worth the difference if
you climb snowy hills, tow a trailer or spend the winter with your hands on the wheel
Keep your money if
you mostly drive on plowed roads and range matters more than anything: the Essential RWD goes 24 km farther according to the rated figures
Preferred AWD or Preferred AWD+: same price, two philosophies
As of the October 4, 2026 check, these two trims carry the same price. Yet they are not aimed at the same buyer.
Preferred AWD versus Preferred AWD+, according to Hyundai Canada's spec sheet
The AWD+ gains
422 hp and 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 s (versus 6.7 s) · 21-in. wheels · 14-speaker Bose audio · 360° cameras · blind-spot view in the instrument cluster
The AWD keeps
heated steering wheel · leatherette seats · power passenger seat · digital key · trailer pre-wiring · 15 km more rated range
Our take
for a Quebec winter, the AWD's heated steering wheel and comfort matter more in everyday driving than 119 extra horsepower. The AWD+ is for drivers who want stronger acceleration.

Added

Unchanged
303 hp · 515 km rated · 5,000 lb of towing capacity · seven seats
Worth the difference if
the third row gets used often and your passengers ride long distances
Keep your money if
you only use the third row occasionally: the Preferred AWD already covers the essentials
From the Luxury Package to the Ultimate Calligraphy
What the Ultimate Calligraphy Package adds over the Luxury Package, according to Hyundai Canada's spec sheet
Price gap
$5,000 (as of )
Added
422 hp · two power-adjustable, ventilated, reclining second-row captain's chairs (six seats instead of seven) · head-up display · sliding centre console · remote smart parking assist · digital rear-view mirror · 21-in. wheels
Worth the difference if
you want a lounge on wheels for four adults and two occasional passengers
Keep your money if
you need seven seats: the Ultimate Calligraphy only has six
Charging, winter and towing: what changes from one trim to the next?
Charging is identical across the board. Hyundai Canada lists 9 h 40 min on a Level 2 home charger, and 24 minutes on a 350 kW fast charger, under its test conditions. At home, overnight is all it takes.
Cold affects every trim the same way. A cold battery delivers less energy, and the heating draws on it. The standard heat pump limits the loss without erasing it. Our take: if your winter trips regularly exceed half the rated range, the difference between 500 and 539 km matters less than having a charger where you sleep.
Towing, however, depends on the trim. 3,500 lb for the Essential RWD, 5,000 lb for the four all-wheel-drive trims, with a trailer equipped with brakes. A trailer cuts range noticeably, whatever the electric vehicle. The full lineup is detailed in our guide to Hyundai towing capacity.

Frequently asked questions
Can adults actually use the IONIQ 9's third row?
Hyundai Canada lists 813 mm of legroom and 1,008 mm of headroom in the third row on the Essential, Preferred AWD and Preferred AWD+ trims. That provides enough room for adults on short trips and is comfortable for teenagers. The best way to know is to sit there during your test drive.
How long does it take to charge the IONIQ 9 at home?
Hyundai Canada lists 9 h 40 min on a 220 to 240 V Level 2 charging station, for every trim. An overnight charge covers daily use. An ordinary 120 V outlet is much slower and is not suited to a battery this size.
Which IONIQ 9 trim can tow a travel trailer?
The four all-wheel-drive trims are rated for 5,000 lb with a trailer equipped with brakes, and the Essential RWD for 3,500 lb. Without trailer brakes, the limit is 750 kg for all of them. Plan on more frequent charging stops with a trailer.
