Buying guide · Hyundai de Magog

Which new compact SUV should you choose in 2026?

Tucson, RAV4, CR-V, Sportage: four good vehicles, four spec sheets that look alike. Yet three questions are enough to rule out two of them before the first test drive. Here they are, along with what each manufacturer has to say this fall.

The 2026 Tucson, Hyundai's compact SUV: all-wheel drive is standard on every trim.

Our 20-second answer

  • You want all-wheel drive at no extra cost.

2026 Hyundai Tucson: it is standard on every trim, from $38,621 (as of ).

  • You insist on a gas engine, no hybrid.

Tucson, Honda CR-V or Kia Sportage. The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is now hybrid only.

  • You want a plug-in hybrid.

Tucson or Sportage. Honda Canada's website shows no plug-in CR-V.

  • You tow more than 2,000 lb.

Look at the gas trim, not the hybrid. On the Tucson: up to 3,500 lb with gas, 2,000 lb with the hybrid.

  • That leaves you two finalists.

Drive them on your own route, a few days apart. Book your Tucson test drive here.

All-in pricing: freight and PDI included, sales tax and registration extra, no rebate deducted.

Ten trims per model, feature names that change from one brand to the next, numbers that all look alike: comparing compact SUVs quickly makes your head spin. The screen, the upholstery and the wheels can be judged in five minutes, sitting in the vehicle. Three points cannot be judged on the spot. Check them before you make the trip.

Is all-wheel drive included in the advertised price?

It is the first thing to check, because two similar starting prices can describe two different vehicles. There are three possibilities in this segment.

  • Standard across the lineup. The starting price includes all-wheel drive. That is the case for the 2026 Hyundai Tucson, on every trim.
  • Optional. The starting price is for a front-wheel-drive model. Honda Canada lists the CR-V's all-wheel drive as “available as an option”; Kia Canada describes “optional all-wheel drive” on the Sportage.
  • Tied to a powertrain or a trim. You then have to move up the range to get it, and the real price is no longer the advertised one.

The gap is no small detail. Even at Hyundai, on the 2026 Kona, the Essential trim goes from $29,866 (as of ) with front-wheel drive to $31,866 (as of ) with all-wheel drive: $2,000 for the same vehicle. Before comparing two starting prices, make sure they describe the same thing.

Whether you actually need it is another question. We cover it, winter tires included, in our guide Which new hybrid SUV to choose for winter in Quebec.

Gas, hybrid or plug-in: who offers what in 2026?

The segment is becoming electrified, but not at the same pace everywhere. Here is what each manufacturer showed on its Canadian website on October 4, 2026. Each listing links to the official page, where you will find the current price for Quebec.

2026 Hyundai Tucson

  • Powertrains:2.5 L gas, 1.6 L turbo hybrid, plug-in hybrid.
  • All-wheel drive:standard on every trim.
  • Takeaway:the only one of the four whose starting price already includes all-wheel drive.

2026 Toyota RAV4

  • Powertrains:Toyota Canada describes it as “fully electrified” and “hybrid only”.
  • Takeaway:if you wanted a conventional gas RAV4, it is no longer in the catalogue.

2026 Honda CR-V

  • Powertrains:1.5 L turbo gas with 190 horsepower, or a 204-horsepower hybrid.
  • All-wheel drive:“available as an option”, according to Honda Canada.
  • Takeaway:compare its price once all-wheel drive is added.

2026 Kia Sportage

  • Powertrains:gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid.
  • All-wheel drive:“optional” on the gas model, according to Kia Canada.
  • Takeaway:the lineup closest to the Tucson's; the difference comes down to drivetrain and equipment.

Our take: all four models are strong contenders, but they meet different needs. One has given up on gas, two make all-wheel drive an option, only one includes it everywhere. Your answer depends on your constraints, not on a ranking.

What is the towing capacity of the trim you're considering?

A model page often advertises the best capacity in the lineup, not that of each trim. On the 2026 Tucson, Hyundai Canada lists up to 3,500 lb with the gas engine and 2,000 lb with the hybrid and the plug-in hybrid. Here, it is the entry trim that tows the most.

If you have a light travel trailer, a boat or an ATV trailer, ask for the towing capacity of the exact trim, whether you shop with us or elsewhere. The details of the Tucson trims are in our comparison Which 2026 Tucson trim to choose.

How much does the Tucson cost, and why no competitor prices?

Prices in effect as of . The 2026 Tucson runs from $38,621 (as of ) for the Preferred trim to $56,221 (as of ) for the Ultimate plug-in hybrid. These prices include freight and PDI. Sales tax and registration are extra. They are set by Hyundai Canada and can change without notice.

Current prices change. The amounts above are dated and exclude rebates. The price advertised today, trim by trim, is on the 2026 Tucson model page. This month's rebates are on the promotions page.

We do not publish the price of the other three models. Manufacturers keep them in their configurators, where you first have to choose your province, and not all of them include the same fees in the amount shown. A price copied here, without a date or a breakdown of fees, would mislead you. The links above lead to the source.

To compare two brands, ask everyone for the same thing: the all-in price for equivalent equipment, quoted on the same date.

Compact, smaller or bigger: are you in the right category?

Before narrowing down four compact SUVs, make sure it is the right size. Our take: getting the category wrong costs more than getting the brand wrong.

  • Stay compactif you carry one to four people, often park in town and your biggest load is a stroller, weekend luggage or sports gear.
  • Consider a larger SUVif you need a third row, even occasionally, or room for five adults on long trips. At Hyundai, that is the 2026 Santa Fe, from $47,016 (as of ).
  • Consider a smaller SUVif you mostly drive alone or with one passenger, in town, and the starting price matters more than space. The 2026 Konastarts at $29,866 (as of )and the 2026 Venueat $25,121 (as of ).

How do you decide between two finalists?

  1. Write down your constraints before looking at vehicles.All-wheel drive or not, towing, annual mileage, ability to plug in, maximum all-in budget.
  2. Assess each model using the three questions above.Drivetrain, powertrain, towing: the list gets short fast.
  3. Ask for the all-in price of the finalists, equipped the same, on the same date.
  4. Drive them on your route.Your daily stretch of highway, the hill you climb each morning, the tight parking spot: that is where differences emerge between vehicles with similar specs.
  5. Have your current vehicle appraisedbefore comparing offers. The appraisal can be requested online.

Frequently asked questions

Do you really need all-wheel drive in Quebec?

It helps on a sloped driveway, an icy hill or a poorly maintained back road. Our take: good winter tires come first. We go into the subject in our guide on hybrid SUVs and winter.

What if the Tucson is over my budget?

Hyundai offers two smaller, less expensive SUVs: the Venue and the Kona. The Kona is available with all-wheel drive; the Venue is front-wheel drive. Their dated starting prices are in the section on categories, above.

Why doesn't this article give competitor prices?

Because manufacturers show them in their configurators, after you choose a province, and not all of them include the same fees. We publish the prices we can verify and date, and we point to the official source for the others.

Are these prices still current?

The prices in this article are those in effect as of October 4, 2026. They are set by Hyundai Canada and can change without notice, especially at the model-year changeover. Today's price is on each model's page.
