Hybrid or all-wheel drive: which should you choose?

Preferred Trend Hybrid versus Preferred Trend AWD, according to Hyundai Canada's spec sheet
Price gap
$100 more for the Hybrid (as of )
The Hybrid wins
5.0 L/100 km combined instead of 8.6 · rear-seat air vents
The AWD wins
HTRAC all-wheel drive · 8-speed automatic transmission · 18-inch wheels instead of 17 · 60 L fuel tank instead of 50
The Hybrid is worth the difference if
you drive a lot, especially in town and on secondary roads
The AWD is worth the difference if
your driveway is on a slope, you take roads that aren't well plowed, or you often head up to the ski hills
The fuel math. Using the combined ratings published by Hyundai Canada, the gap is 3.6 L per 100 km. At 20,000 km a year, that works out to about 720 litres of gas. Your actual driving will shift that figure, but the order of magnitude holds.
Our take for winter. All-wheel drive helps you get going and climb. It doesn't help you brake or turn: that's what winter tires do. With good winter tires, a front-wheel-drive car gets through most Eastern Townships winters. If your daily drive includes an icy hill or a back road, the Preferred Trend AWD is the right Sonata. For an explanation, see our article on how a hybrid car works.
Is the N Line worth the extra?

What the N Line adds over the Preferred Trend AWD, according to Hyundai Canada's spec sheet
Price gap

What the spec sheet doesn't list for the N Line
Ventilated front seats · power-adjustable passenger seat · all-wheel drive (it's front-wheel drive)
It's worth the difference if
you love driving and want the most comprehensive equipment list in the lineup
Keep your money if
ventilated seats matter more to you than power, or you want all-wheel drive
