2026 Hyundai towing capacity: which model should you choose?
A travel trailer, a boat, an ATV trailer: the right Hyundai depends on the loaded weight of what you're towing. Here is the capacity of every new 2026 model as published by Hyundai Canada, and the trim we recommend for each weight range.

Our 20-second answer
Up to 2,000 lb (utility or ATV trailer):
the Tucson Hybrid Night Edition for a five-seat vehicle you mostly drive without a trailer; if capacity matters more, the gas-powered Preferred goes up to 3,500 lb. The Santa Fe Preferred if you need seven seats, with the same capacity.
Over 2,000 lb, up to 3,500 lb (small boat, light travel trailer):
the gas-powered Tucson Preferred, the only Tucson powertrain rated above 2,000 lb. The Trend package doesn't tow any more than that.
Over 3,500 lb, up to 4,000 lb:
the Palisade Luxury Hybrid: integrated hitch as standard and 8.1 L/100 km combined without a trailer, the lowest in the Palisade lineup.
Over 4,000 lb, up to 5,000 lb:
the Palisade Preferred Trend V6, with a hitch to be installed; the XRT Pro V6 if you often take a soft or snow-covered access road on a slope. Going electric: the IONIQ 9 Preferred AWD.
Venue, Kona, Kona Electric, Elantra, Sonata:
no towing capacity listed in their 2026 Canadian spec sheet. We don't recommend them for towing a trailer.
Capacities with a braked, loaded trailer, from Hyundai Canada's 2026 spec sheets verified on October 16, 2026. Before choosing, also check the tongue weight and the payload left over after passengers and luggage. Above 5,000 lb, no 2026 Hyundai is suitable. The IONIQ 5 tops out at 1,224 kg (about 2,700 lb).

Braked, unbraked, payload: how do you do the math?
The “braked” capacity assumes a trailer fitted with its own braking system. It's the figure usually quoted, and it's the highest one. The “unbraked” capacity applies to a small trailer that has none: it sits around 1,650 lb (750 kg) for every model with a published unbraked towing rating. Two other limits matter just as much: the tongue weight must stay within both the vehicle's and the hitch's ratings, and must also count toward the vehicle's payload.
Two pitfalls come up often:
- The weight that counts is the loaded trailer's, not its empty weight. A travel trailer with water, propane and luggage weighs noticeably more than the seller's spec sheet says.
- Payload matters as much as towing capacity.Passengers, luggage and the load the trailer puts on the hitch must stay under the vehicle's load capacity, the SAAQ reminds us, without exceeding the rear axle's. Start from the load capacity printed on your vehicle's label. If it says 500 kg, four 80 kg adults (320 kg) and 50 kg of luggage leave 130 kg for added accessories and tongue weight. A 150 kg tongue weight would already exceed that limit, even with a trailer under the advertised capacity. Also have the actual tongue weight measured: the trailer's advertised weight doesn't tell you.
In Quebec, the SAAQ requires brakes on all load-bearing wheels of a trailer that weighs, load included, 1,300 kg or more, or more than half the weight of the towing vehicle. Meeting either one of the two criteria is enough. A boat and trailer weighing 3,000 lb (about 1,360 kg) must therefore have their own brakes, and it's the “braked” column of the chart that applies. The opposite situation can catch you out, too: an unbraked utility trailer loaded to 780 kg escapes the SAAQ requirement behind a Tucson, but it exceeds the 748 kg Hyundai allows without brakes. As far as Hyundai is concerned, it needs brakes anyway.

Tucson and Palisade: which powertrain should you choose for towing?

On the 2026 Tucson and Palisade, the powertrain sets the capacity. The trim decides the towing equipment.
- Tucson:3,500 lb with the 2.5 L gas engine (Preferred, Preferred with Trend package), 2,000 lb for the hybrids (Night Edition, N Line, Ultimate) as well as the plug-in hybrid. Between 2,000 and 3,500 lb, only the gas-powered Tucson will do. Behind the wheel, the 2.5 L engine feels unhurried even without a trailer: with one hitched up, leave yourself more room to pass. The hybrid switches from electric to gas without a jolt, with acceptable pickup, nothing more.
- Palisade:5,000 lb with the V6 (Preferred Trend, XRT Pro, Ultimate Calligraphy), 4,000 lb as a hybrid (Luxury, Ultimate Calligraphy Hybrid). Our pick: the Luxury Hybrid up to 4,000 lb if you mostly drive without a trailer, with its 8.1 L/100 km combined rating; the Preferred Trend V6 as soon as you need to go past 4,000 lb, adding the hitch, which isn't standard on it. Behind the wheel, the hybrid has the torque advantage: it arrives very early, acceleration is effortless, and the gas engine shuts off and restarts without a shudder in a very quiet cabin. The V6 favours smoothness over brisk acceleration. Torque helps with acceleration, but it doesn't set the capacity: Hyundai caps the hybrid at 4,000 lb and gives the V6 5,000 lb, which therefore remains our choice above 4,000 lb. For a soft cottage road or a sloped boat launch, the XRT Pro V6 keeps the 5,000 lb and adds an electronic limited-slip rear differential, all-terrain tires and the integrated hitch, all standard. In snow, that differential puts the power down well; in exchange, its all-terrain tires produce a slight rumble on pavement.
The 2026 Santa Fe is sold only as a hybrid in Canada: all four of its trims tow 2,000 lb. It suits a loaded trailer of 2,000 lb or less, such as a utility or ATV trailer.
On the equipment side, trailer sway control is standard on every 2026 Palisade and Tucson, and trailer pre-wiring on every Tucson. The integrated hitch with cover is standard on every Palisade except the Preferred Trend, which needs it installed before your first trip. In every case, you still need to choose the ball mount, ball and connector that suit your trailer, then a brake controller if it has electric brakes. Our parts and accessories department can tell you which parts fit your trim. The full rundown of Tucson trims is in our comparison Which 2026 Tucson trim should you choose.
Can you tow a trailer with an electric Hyundai?
Yes: 5,000 lb for the all-wheel-drive IONIQ 9, 3,500 lb for the Essential RWD, 1,224 kg (about 2,700 lb) for the IONIQ 5. The Kona Electric has no towing capacity in its Canadian spec sheet.
To plan your charging stops, weight isn't the whole story: a tall travel trailer creates more air resistance than a low trailer of the same mass, and range drops accordingly. Up to 1,224 kg with a braked trailer, the IONIQ 5 is enough; beyond that, the rear-wheel-drive IONIQ 9 Essential reaches 3,500 lb. To go past 3,500 lb, our pick is the IONIQ 9 Preferred AWD: it goes up to 5,000 lb and comes with trailer pre-wiring as standard, like the Preferred AWD with Luxury package and the Preferred AWD+ with Ultimate Calligraphy package, but not the Preferred AWD+. Behind the wheel, it drives like a big, quiet, supple highway cruiser. With a travel trailer hitched up, choose charging stations where you can park and plug in without unhitching. For long, repeated legs with a travel trailer, our pick is the Palisade Preferred Trend V6: 5,000 lb, no charging stops to plan, but a hitch to add.

Frequently asked questions
Does a heavier-duty hitch increase my Hyundai's towing capacity?
No. A heavier-duty hitch doesn't raise the capacity set by Hyundai. The SAAQ requires you to respect both the vehicle's capacity and the hitch manufacturer's limits: the lower of the two is what counts.
Do you need a safety chain between the trailer and the vehicle?
Yes, whenever the trailer has no independent braking system able to stop it if it comes loose: the SAAQ then requires a safety chain or cable attached directly to the towing vehicle.
Where can I find my own vehicle's towing capacity?
In the towing section of the owner's manual, for your model, model year and powertrain; the SAAQ points out that some vehicles have a capacity of 0 kg. The vehicle's load label is then used to work out what's left for luggage and tongue weight. For a Hyundai from another model year, don't reuse the figures in this chart: they apply to the 2026 models sold in Canada.
